The cut flower industry relies heavily on chemical pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, which pollute soil, air, water and wildlife thereby disrupting ecosystems causing long-term damage to biodiversity. 

Transportation of cut flowers from the largest cut flower producers in Colombia, Ecuador and the Netherlands to wholesalers and retailers worldwide results in significant carbon emissions (estimated at around 1.4 million tons annually from transportation alone).

The cut flower industry's emphasis on high 

volume and low prices lead to over-planting and 

waste.  Floral waste from discarded flowers 

and floral foam are environmental hazards.
